Gote Shibari is for Shibari enthusiasts who want to learn our interpretation of one of the most iconic ties in Japanese style rope bondage: the gote shibari (i.e. hands tied in the back, a.k.a. the takate kote, TK, or boxtie).

The gote shibari comes in different shapes and forms in response to our varying body types, flexibility limitations, and needs. Rather than force one pattern for the whole class, we’ll help you build a gote that works best for you.

We will focus on the base form of the gote for floor-based play purposes.

By the end of this course, you and your partner will be able to:

  • Set and settle into the gote position that works for you with lower risks of injury, work within your current level of flexibility, and hold the position more sustainably—by understanding your range of motion, the physical risks, and their mitigation steps
  • Repeat the steps of the gote shibari’s pattern from memory, take advantage of your body’s natural anchor points, and adjust the ties to your body’s specific needs and constraints
  • Eliminate unwanted fumbling or friction while tying, increase your tying speed and efficiency, and effectively manage mistakes and pain when they arise
  • Alert your partner quickly & articulately when there are issues, recognize & respond to non-verbal signals appropriately, and infuse your tying with intention during opportune moments for the gote in particular

Requires:

  • Completed [301] Gote Shibari
  • 30-second tying time for any Single Column Tie (Honmusubi or Marumusubi preferred)
  • Four to six (4-6) pieces of 8-meter ropes (jute ropes preferred)

If you ever struggled with the “standard” positions or felt disappointed that the most popular ties don’t play nice with your flexibility or physical context, you aren’t alone. We’ve been misled into thinking that there’s some kind of “correct” body for Shibari when in reality, the rope is always meant to adjust to us.

Function: How to Play with Bodies in Bondage invites you to take a closer look at how our bodies move, the positions that work for us, and how to transition between our options more easily. Together, we’ll identify what makes us and our shapes unique, their advantages and opportunities, so that we can focus on enjoying ourselves with the incredible bodies that we already have in the here and now.

Requires:

  • Completed [301] Gote Shibari
  • 30-second tying time for any Single Column Tie (Honmusubi or Marumusubi preferred)
  • Four to six (4-6) pieces of 8-meter ropes (jute ropes preferred)

Wraps that get so tight that your limbs end up numb, or those that keep sliding around and pose risks from shearing forces—they’re no fun. Emergencies don’t just cut our play time short: they can also risk our lives.

Form: How to Tame and Troubleshoot Tension invites you to peek into how rope really behaves to make finding your partner’s ideal Goldilocks-level tension while still keeping the ties beautiful, safe, and secure. Together, we’ll study how to improve our tension, knowing when and why we use which frictions, and build systems with our rope harnesses and cuffs—so we can keep having fun without sending people to the emergency room.

Requires:

  • Completed [301] Gote Shibari
  • 30-second tying time for any Single Column Tie (Honmusubi or Marumusubi preferred)
  • Four to six (4-6) pieces of 8-meter ropes (jute ropes preferred)

Performance anxiety sucks and nobody enjoys feeling like we need to apologize when we fail to stay in sync because we’ve forgotten the pattern or struggle to stay in our ropey headspace.

Flow: How to Focus & Flow with Your Partner invites you to analyze the little things you do that may make or break our bondage sessions and the specific keys that unlock kink space for you. Together, we’ll work on our self-, time-, and distraction-management during play, so that we can eliminate fumbling and develop finesse, intentionally take as much or as little time as we need, and manage our experience with elements like pain and mistakes during play.

Requires:

  • Completed [301] Gote Shibari
  • 30-second tying time for any Single Column Tie (Honmusubi or Marumusubi preferred)
  • Four to six (4-6) pieces of 8-meter ropes (jute ropes preferred)

Communication is the core of Japanese style rope bondage but people often hyperfocus on tying techniques. As a result, we have an abundance of pattern-collectors who treat their partners like poseable mannequins instead of partners who genuinely enjoy playing with each other.

Fluency: How to Touch Hearts & Tell Stories invites you to revisit the different ways that we communicate so that we can be more intentional during our rope scenes. Together, we’ll communicate in different ways to better navigate our desires or alert partners to danger, observe and convey each other’s intentions during play, and structure our sessions for the type of interactions we enjoy—so that our bondage can go beyond the mere repetition of popular shapes.

(Jute and synthetic ropes are available for borrowing or for sale at the studio.)
